Eugene Chadbourne - Live NITETROTTER Session

Illustration Jorge Tapia / Sound Engineering Jorge Tapia / Text Mr. Nitetrotter - February 27, 2010

Doc Eugene is probably the man who invented avant-garde country or if not he was one of the first to shed lights on country music's weird leanings. He is a musical pioneer and most people have never heard of him. Maybe you have you heard of the instrument he invented? It is called the electric rake and it will blow your mind!

Marty Jones of X+X paid out of his pocked to fly this guy to East Moline to play one show at Mixtapes. There were probably only 20 -30 people at the show but what amazed me was who was there. It was older local musicians like Pat Stolley the original technician at Daytrotter and local indie rock wizard. Some of his friends and a few other people from bands. Eugene put on a really good show playing banjo and electric rake. He is very technically proficient on his instrument often using bebop scales and other interesting techniques all with a sense of urgency. His lyrics are funny but extremely witty. We received a cdr from him later that incorporated lyrics about his downtown Silvis hotel. Hee Haw! Try to listen for when Craig burps. Enjoy direct from the Nitetrotter archives!

Nitetrotter is extremely happy to present you the next two songs by The Great American Beast a very heavy spazzy treat with psychedelic tendencies. They play complicated and unpredictable math music that makes the listener want to break something.

The Great American Beast came in to Nitetrotter Studios and laid these tracks down with ease just like seasoned pros. Keep your eyes peeled for these power hessians who will be penetrating skulls across this run down nation with their killer live show supporting an album on Trustkill.

We'll we hope you enjoy the pleasantly harsh tones we captured for you!

Here Comes Chernobyl - Demo Review

Text Mr Nitetrotter

Here Comes Chernobyl is a progressive southern punk band from Atlanta, Georgie featuring Cleveland, Illinois transplant Adam Carton. These songs are precise, recorded well and very interesting. They have a 21st century punk sound that seems thrash influenced, the last song even has a heavy stoner rock part. The vocals are a nice balance of thrash pop punk stylings with Adam's weird political poetic singing that makes this band worth checking out. Its tight and different, in a very good way. The lyrics seem very appropriate for those of us living in Amerika during the Great Recession. Here Comes Chernobyl!!!!

Anniversary Club - NITETROTTER Session

Illustration Jorge Tapia / Sound Engineering Ian Harris / Text Mr. Nitetrotter - February 24, 2010

The Anniversary Club is Chris Stowe a traveling singer-song writer. His songs are passionate and introspective. They have a deep 1990s diy pop punk like Weakerthans or Fifteen.

Check him out or even better catch him at a venue near you as he seems to get around. Make sure you buy him some whiskey to wish him on his way.

Harry Merry, Glass Bricks and John Bellows - Live Review

On Sunday February 21st it was a snowy night in Chicago. I got to Ruben's Palace a small brick warehouse in Humboldt Park. The inside has a nice dark ambience with a projector aimed at a big white wall behind the stage, often projecting weird movies.

The first act was John Bellows. He was a anti-folk one man band starting on the drums with vocals, then to a 3/4 size amplified acoustic guitar playing freaky folk tunes. He kept incorporating Christian Christmas carols in to his music. His set was impressive and he was quite the entertainer with David Lee Roth esque kicks while wearing gray sweat pants and snow boots.

The second act was Glass Bricks a chicago act with a female guitar player lead vocalist, female keyboard player who played a wurlitzer electric piano and sang backing harmonies, and a male rhythm section, the bass player of which plays in Bird Names. They are fresh even though they have a sound that is sort of a throwback with a twist. They sort of sound like a 60s girl group mixed with 90's riot grrl pop punk like Discount, while incorporating neo-psychedelic rage. They have tight vocals and catchy lyrics, very uplifting sounds amidst the Great Recession.

Finally it was time for all the kids to get off the stage and the king of retard rock Harry Merry to grace us with his presence. His set went from good to bad to ugly to just plain genius. He played the sharkie song approx 3.25 times. He would start it, play half let the ipod fade out and played it once or twice almost entirely. "Well Yeah Whatever" got a huge response, and he saved "Stevie Storm" for last before going in to a half hour at least encore.

What got my british comrade and I was the cute girl dancing up front who knew every word. We asked her if she was on tour with him and she said "I wish!". While playing keyboard he would squat down on his knees while smiling doing some sort of funny dance. His moves were over the top and his sound drove most of the audience out. He played for about two hours and the crowd went from about 30-40 to about only 5-10. When it ended everyone shouted for more.

I had never seen anything like this. Harry Merry is like watching a dutch porno and a Rotterdam car wreck at the same time. He is some kind of genius.

An open letter from Mr. Nitetrotter to Johnnie Cluney of Daytrotter

Johnnie,

First off we are not a rival of daytrotter but just a reaction to it. We are seizing the means of production.

You also can't be angry when people hold big corporations accountable in a small community(Daytrotter is 49% owned by a multi million dollar corporation). You guys seem to be more concerned with what is "cool" or "popular" or else you would of put up local bands by now. If some local band got on Pitchfork I am sure Sean would hit them up, until then it takes four years of dick sucking, and most only got two.

We on the other hand don't know whats cool nor do we claim to. We just want to document anybody. Mondo Drag and any musician in the QC is welcome to record a Nitetrotter.

Sorry Johnnie we are on a mission from God and yes it is a cool life! Freedom. If you arn't my friend over this, you probably never were.

Also if anything you should thank us for all the attention we have put on Daytrotter. None of our friends really knew about or cared about it. Now they do. You can thank us later

As a fan of Daytrotter I have noticed that in the post Nitetrotter era you started paying attention to weird music more(asking many bands who played nitetrotter shows to record) and you finally put up a local band(of course your own).

I personally would of suggested Chad Gooch, Seth Knappen, Centuar Noir or any of the good QC indie bands should of been recorded years ago, but again as I stated I don't know what's cool or could be popular. I don't read pitchfork.

So thats why we started Nitetrotter. For people like them or the kiddie punk bands. The clock is ticking this music only lasts so long and it needs to be documented.

Sorry if our behavior has been inappropriate I would personally love to see everyone bury the hatchet, but honestly the only people who have shown me any hatred has been you, Joe or Carl. All your friends are all secret Nitetrotter fans if you didnt know. We get fan emails from those who want to remain anonymous thanking us for playing devils advocate.

Nitetrotter isn't about hating its about making something out of nothing, not talking about doing shit but actually doing it and most importantly not waiting for some journalist to do it for you!

If you hate us so bad we'll you better continue to blacklist, slander, even sue us or do what you got to do but we aint ever fucking slowing down man. EVER

Peace

"Mr. Nitetrotter"

Cities Never Sleep - NITETROTTER Session

Illustration Jorge Tapia and Chica X / Sound Engineering Ian Harris / Text Mr. Nitetrotter - February 20, 2010

We'll we have a treat here. Cities Never Sleep covering one of Mr. Nitetrotter's favorite songs of all time, "Danger Zone". Who remembers the scene in the Alvin and Chipmunks cartoon movie from the 90s when Alvin is driving around in a parody of the Bat Mobile to this song?

Thank you Cities Never Sleep you're our god damn heroes.
Listen to this fresh take on the classic epic jam and pay special attention to the lead vocalist's soaring vocals, very impressive. We dig the slightly chugging breakdown as well. Kenny Loggins would be proud.

The Putz - NITETROTTER Session

Illustration Jorge Tapia / Sound Engineering Ian Harris / Text Mr. Nitetrotter - February 20, 2010

The Putz are a Indiana punk band that could be compared to the likes of the Ramones or Screeching Weasel. They have their own unique 21st century version of the classic but timeless sound.

For some of us who grew up on this sort of thing, this kind of music never gets old.

We caught up with the Putz at Mixtapes where they tracked a song for Nitetrotter.  Enjoy.

Lord Of The Yum Yum on Chic-A-Go-Go

The long lost South African Beach Boy!

For those who don't think the Beach Boys can really jam well check this hot one from the 70s.

Now wait who is that guy singing lead on Wild Honey?
Well his name is Blondie Chaplin and he played with the Beach Boys on a few records; Holland, Live.

Carl Wilson discovered Blondie's band the Flames to be on the Beach Boy's Brother Records. The band put out an album and due to weird circumstance like Brian being mentally unhealthy and Dennis not being able to play the drums for a few years, he joined the Beach Boys. It seems to be a little known part of the rich history of the Beach Boys.

Blondie's stint with the Beach Boys was pretty short but he ended up playing with The Band and eventually playing as a sideman with The Rolling Stones.

I was initially drawn to Blondie's soulful vocals on Wild Honey. I actually like Blondie's version better than the original. It has made me look at the Holland album in such a different way. His songs are deep cuts that really strike a nerve.

Nitetrotter special news!!

First off, the Nitetrotter show tonight in East Moline  was sold out. Thanks to everyone came and all the bands that played. We have been really been getting serious support lately. Its really helping us chug along. We appreciate all the good vibes.
Many new sessions on the way. Our East Moline and Chicago studios are gaining momentum and we got some great ones cooking. Expect many recordings of various fidelities on the way.
We will also be opening a Nitetrotter office in Southern England. We are very excited about this and hope to open more of a pipeline between European artists and Nitetrotter. More details very soon.

ARU with the iiiiii - Live NITETROTTER Session

February 16, 2010 - Illustration Jorge Tapia / Sound Engineering Randy Carter / Text Mr. Nitetrotter

The iiii's have come a long way from their early jaunts in improvised music. They are more obnoxious than ever and this recording proves it. The specimen at hand comes to us via a live show last month at Mixtapes in East Moline. It is a collaboration with Aural Resuscitation Unit from Dubuque Iowa.

Towards the end of the recording Billy iiii makes a statement about the "Weird Town" area of East Moline. Only one who has gotten weird in East Moline knows what he is talking about.

ARU with iiiiiii - "Eating weed brownies to make music to eat weed brownies to" and "Billy pulled a loaded gun out on the audience in the dark and they didn't even notice"

Recorded Live January 13th, 2010 at Mixtapes in East Moline, Illinois.

Skies Alive - NITETROTTER Session

Illustration Jorge Tapia / Sound Engineering Ian Harris / Text Mr. Nitetrotter - February 16, 2010

Skies Alive come to us from the mighty northern state of Minnesota. They play a brand of pop punk that is very reminiscent to what was popular in the early Aughts.

Remember getting or giving a hand job at the Blink 182 concert back in 2002? Thats what this song is an answer to. Trust us hand jobs are always good, but everyone could feel something bigger and better around the corner.

Weird life in Cairo, Little Egypt

Here is a nice article on the TIME website that discusses how Chris Clavin founder of Plan It X records has moved to Cairo, Illinois trying to get something going. For those who don't know Cairo is a bizarre town at the most southern point of Illinois, a part known as Little Egypt. It is mostly abandoned and seems ripe for some weird times. "Trying To Revitalize a Dying Small Town"
Here is a documentary from 2005 on Cairo.
