Math The Band-NITETROTTER Interview
Inteview Merry C. / Text Suburban Legend
Our friends Math The Band our currently carving their way across the U.S. in support of MC Chris. Do yourself a favor and try to catch them live, it's definetly worth it.
You can check out the remainging dates of their tour HERE. Thanks for reading & Good Nite!
Math The Band Interview
What bands inspire your music?-Merry
We really like Andrew W.K., Devo, and atom and his package. They've all inspired us a lot.-Kevin MTB
How did you guys end up forming the band?
I started the band by myself when i was 13 or 14. It's gone through a lot of changes, and for the past 3 years my girlfriend justine has been playing too, along with an assortment of other friends from time to time.
We like the band name. How did you guys come up with it?
When I was trying to come up for a name for the band, I saw a pin on my backpack that just said "math", and had a bunch of numbers, addition, subtraction and multiplication signs on it. I named the band after the pin so that my band would have a pin.
If you could perform anywhere with any band, who would it be and where would you do it?
Andrew W.K. at Stonehenge.
What is your favorite song to perform?
We generally like playing whatever song is the newest at the time. whenever we go out on tour we add another 10 or 15 minutes of new material, and have a really good time with the excitement of new songs.
What songs would you recommend to people just starting to get into your music?
I'd recommend 'why didnt you get a haircut', off our last album 'dont worry' for the first song, but I'd recommend coming to a live show over listening to any mp3 any day. We have a hard time getting the full spectrum and attitude of the songs through on a cd. I feel we're really a live band more than a recorded one.
Any crazy tour stories to share?
Here are three:
I saw a motorcycle drive into a grocery store, right down the produce aisle in Oregon. Nobody believes me though.
What bands are people not listening to right now that they should be?
The lima research society, Iji, Streight Angular, Uncle Monsterface, Fishboy
What bands are people listening to right now that they shouldn't be? (Feel free to be mean.)
Crystal Castles.
Anything else you want to share with the NITETROTTER public?
If anyone finds a vhs copy of the movie "ghost dad", please send an email to maththeband@gmail.com ASAP

Icarus The Owl-NITETROTTER Interview
Interview conducted via E-mail by Merry C.
We met Icarus The Owl at an awesome NITETROTTER show in East Moline,IL. They shared the stage on a beautiful spring night with our friends Victory in Numbers, and Driver Side Impact. Icarus The Owl hails from Portland, Oregon and plays catchy, and at times extremely technical math rock. Icarus The Owl is one of those bands that when you listen their recordings, could either be really entertaining live, or very disappointing, fortunately for everyone that is lucky enough to catch one of their shows, they are the former. Their debut album, The Spotless Mind (can be purchased here) has met extremely mixed reviews, but has garnered much praise among everyday music fans. Unfortunately, due to our session scheduling on the day we met up, they couldn't record with us, so we got a new video, and an interview with guitarist/lead singer Joey Rubenstein instead. Thanks for Reading, and Good Nite.
Who were your biggest influences musically growing up?
Blink 182, The Ataris, Nofx,Rufio, New Found Glory, Strung Out,etc- A lot of the 90's punk music when Epitaph and Fat Wreck ruled the scene. My tastes have changed since then, although I still love those bands.
How did you get together?
Mutual friends and Craiglist!
How do you guys write your music? Is it a collaborative process, or does one band member run the show?
Usually I (Joey) will come up with a song and we will as a band re-work the song and trim the fat. We do a collaborative edit/re-write. I also loop a lot of my guitar riffs so the drummer can find the perfect part for it.
Which of your songs/albums would you recommend to a new fan just starting to listen to your music?
I'd recommend the song "The Extortionist" and the song" Mythomaniac" if the person was mainly into pop music, I'd recommend "Game Of Jenga"
What's your favorite venue to play?
Mixtapes. Duh! ;)
What's your favorite band to tour with?
Lights Out Dancing. They are super fun guys and a really good band.
Any crazy tour stories you want to share?
Tanner was almost raped at a rest stop by a horny trucker. No Joke.
What are you guys listening to right now that everyone else should be?
Thrice, Damiera, and As Tall As Lions.
What are people listening to right now that they shouldn't be?
Monkeys doing it! But really if you get pleasure out of llistening to a band then there is no shame in that- even if it is Creed.
When you guys aren't touring, what do you like to do?
We usually work. But I enjoy playing guitar and writing new song. I love going to the movies as well.
Anything you want to share with the NITETROTTER public?
Check out our album on itunes please! Love you.

Eagle Scout-NITETROTTER Session

Here is Eagle Scout's NITETROTTER Session and subsequent interview. Their catchy Post-Punk sound may or may not have arrived via a time machine from Kansas in the late 90's. They also are among the first wave of bands to tell the Trotter who shall remain nameless to suck one, after being blown off, only to have them come back and contact them later. Thanks for choosing to ride out with the devil duders! You can catch them Live touring the US this summer, and also at NITETROTTER Fest on July 10th, in East Moline,IL. You also should go buy their new Full Length Album "New Hands" Thanks for listening, and Good NITE.

Ben: I think my first concert was Journey.
Kyle: The first CD I ever bought was the “D2: Mighty Ducks” soundtrack.
Brandon : The first CD I ever bought was “At the Drive-In.” I was influenced a lot by punk rock and ‘80’s music when I was little.
Jeremiah: I think the first CD I bought was Jock Jams.
Be: I always listened to my brother’s MXPX and Relient K CDs. Then I liked Pedro the Lion. I think the first CD I bought was Limp Bizkit
J: My musical taste was really influenced by Jock Jams.
How did you guys get together?
K: We all go to the same college. This was before Robert was in the band. I was eating with our friends “the Chrises.” We went to get our food and when we went back, we noticed that somebody took our table. It was a bunch of jock dudes, jock jams. So, Kyle and Brandon were sitting near by and we started to sit with them.
Br: So, it was outcasts getting together. We always saw Jeremiah around campus.
Be: He asked us if he played an instrument, could be in the band. We agreed, and here we are.
How did you guys hook up with NITETROTTER?
K: Well, pretty much when we routed the tour, we were looking for something in the QC. We actually played at Mixtapes! about two years ago, so we sent them a message. We got hooked up with Nitetrotter because they hooked up with us!
Be: It’s like when you are with a girl in your group of friends and you just hook up with her because she’s around.
Br: That never happens.
Be: I saw it in a movie once.
What’s your favorite venue to play?
All: The Loft in Macomb.
K: There are two other ones. The Bean in East Peoria, and I love the warehouse in East Ridge, Tennessee. And that house in Champaign
Br: Every place we play is like our favorite.
K: Mixtapes!
All: Yeah, Mixtapes!
When you guys aren’t touring, what do you do in your free time?
Be: Robert likes to make fun games like, “Say what you don’t like about someone,” all at the same time. Brandon likes to play Pokemon.
Br: We play Wiffleball
J: I like to spend hours on Chatroulette.
R: I like to read.
Br: We’re all still in school, so that takes up a lot of our time.
J: I like to play ultimate on the quad with the Kappa Delta boys.
What songs would you suggest to fans just starting to get into your music?
Br: I like “Weaker Science.” That’s my favorite song off our new album.
Anything you want to share with the NITETROTTER public?
K: Respect Iowa.
Be: watch Zach Galifianakis.
Br: I feel like we need to say something witty and profound.
R: In memoriam of those pizza cats from this summer.
Be: They were in a box when we were eating pizza… We could say, watch “Heavyweights.”
